RIO De Janeiro: Before The Games
As I sat down the other night to see the opening ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympic games in Brazil, my mind automatically floated back to the time I spent in Rio De Janeiro. Rio is a destination that stimulates all senses, body mind and spirit.
What makes Rio a favorite among travelers? Topping the list of Rio’s marvels is it’s Guanabara Bay setting, an incomparable mixture of mountains, the sea, the rain forest and the beaches. Beyond the sands of Copacabana and Ipanema and the awesome peaks of Sugarloaf and Corcovado you can find Rio’s neighborhoods, and like most tourist destinations, there is a Kaleidoscope of contrasting experiences.
Because of the white sand beaches, where the water is unbelievably clear with shades of blues and greens, to the Centro district, a historic site filled with colonial monuments, museums and modern office towers, a city tour is the best way to get a good feel of this destination.
For Art lovers there is the Santa Teresa district where you will find street vendors and artist’s studios. For those who prefer to dance the night away, Lapa’s Samba Club is the place to brush up on your dance moves .
One of the most memorable experiences of my visit was the harrowing cable car ride to the top of Corcovado mountain to see up close the Christ the Redeemer statue and then looking out in the distance to see the magnificent, mind blowing view of Sugarloaf mountain standing regal in the distance.
Although my trip to Brazil was a few years ago, the memories of my trip to Rio De Janeiro still lingers on. Rio is no longer the capital of Brazil (read the history of this magnificent destination in my newsletter) Now the Capital is Brasilia, but Rio , even now, stands out as the capital of culture, dance and good times. Despite the overwhelming cloud of the Zika threat, Rio is still the face of the world's attention and the host of the 2016 World Olympics.
